The “Hygiene Prize 2009” awarded by the Rudolf Schülke Foundation

On behalf of the Rudolf Schülke Foundation the Hygiene Prize was awarded by the chairman of the executive committee, Professor Martin Exner, MD, in Hamburg on 27 November.

The Hygiene Prize, worth €15,000 was shared between two scientists. Either of them is Alexander Friedrich, MD from the University Münster with his work titled: EUREGIO MRSA-Net Twente / Münsterland – A Dutch-German Cross-Border Network for the Prevention and Control of Infections caused by Methycillin-Restistant Staphylococcus aureus " and the other is Arne Simon, MD from the University Bonn with his work titled "Healthcare-associated infections in pediatric cancer patients: results of a prospective surveillance study from university hospitals in Germany and Switzerland".

The Rudolf Schülke Foundation awards the Hygiene Prize biennially to scientists who have achieved remarkable solutions to problems in the area of hygiene, microbiology and preventive medicine.

Along with the Hygiene Prize the Foundation awards the Hygieia Medal every two years. This medal is intended to honour those people who have devoted their lives’ work to hygiene and microbiology.

This year it was awarded to Professor Syed A. Sattar, PhD, Director of the Centre for Research on Environmental Microbiology (CREM) Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa.

Symposium of the Rudolf Schülke Foundation - 26 and 27 November 2009

Preceding the prize award and the award of the Hygieia Medal the Rudolf Schülke Foundation organised a two-day symposium on the topic: “The need of hygiene in everyday life - challenges and perspectives””.

Hygienists and microbiologists from Germany, Austria, France, England and Canada participated in the symposium.
